This two-day workshop offers an introduction to the diverse techniques used in the rich history of manipulated celluloid. Deneb Martos, a visual artist specialized in cameraless cinema practices, will guide participants through various methods, focusing primarily on chemigrams and direct interventions (painting, scratching, etc.) on film.
Participants will work with 35mm film and have access to a 35mm projector to screen both their work-in-progress and final results.
The workshop begins with a theoretical introduction, reviewing key filmmakers who have explored found footage, particularly in relation to direct film intervention. Deneb Martos will present her main works, discussing the creative process behind each piece, the materials used, and their conceptual framework. This will serve as a starting point for participants to think about their own approaches to celluloid intervention.
This is a hands-on workshop with a small group to ensure close attention to each participant. After understanding the possibilities of working directly on film, participants will begin experimenting with their own footage. Techniques will be adapted during the workshop, ranging from chemigram processes to more direct interventions. Ideally, participants will create loops to be projected in 35mm.
The workshop concludes with a screening of participants’ films and a collective discussion of the results. The goal is for this workshop to serve as an initial approach, encouraging participants to develop their own cameraless film projects.
