Magali Coremans: Holding Space Between Our Hands

At the invitation of Atelier OFFoff, Magali Coremans presents an installation at the Oud Huis in Kunsthal Gent across three weekends, as part of her ongoing research project Holding Space Between Our Hands.

Holding Space Between Our Hands explores the tangible and sensory qualities of analog film projection as a living and interactive medium. Through an experimental engagement with physical film, organic chemical processes and careful scenographic interventions, the work seeks to rediscover and deepen the spatial and tactile experience of film, with particular attention to autonomy, reciprocity and the unpredictable.

This work-in-progress takes as its starting point the idea of affordance: the intuitive way in which the living world invites us to perceive and to enter into a relationship with it. How does a visitor become not just a spectator, but part of what emerges?

Coremans’ approach, which opens space for exchange and puts the process front and center, strongly resonates with Atelier OFFoff – the open collective within Art Cinema OFFoff. The exhibition serves as the starting point for a series of events by Atelier OFFoff at Kunsthal Gent this fall, as part of the Temporary Centre for Shared Practices, including a practice-based talk with Magali Coremans, an Open Screen, a peer-to-peer session for work-in-progress and a writing trajectory woven throughout the entire series.

Magali Coremans is a Brussels-based artist working across film, text, photography and installation. Through an intuitive and process-driven approach, she explores the partial nature of perception and the spaces that open up for reflection and dialogue in what remains unresolved or unseen. Themes of care, embodiment and relationality run through her projects, which often take shape through collaboration. At its core, her practice is an ongoing act of attentiveness – to the body, to memory and to the quiet threads that connect people and places.
