The musician George van Dam and the artist Mathieu Hendrickx explore the visual translation of a score. They present their new film K.141 — Scarlatti, conceived as an opening to Goldberg Variations (2020). We are screening the two films together.

In the presence of George van Dam & Mathieu Hendrickx

George van Dam (1964) has worked with several leading composers of today and with ensembles such as the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, Ensemble Modern, MusikFabrik and Ictus, of which he is one of the founding members. He’s very active in the dance- and theatre world (for Rosas/Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, LOD, Transparant, Kaaitheater, Ultima Vez/Wim Vandekeybus, Jan Lauwers/Needcompany). He worked with visual artists Manon de Boer, Jorge Léon, Ana Torfs and others.

Mathieu Hendrickx (1987) studied psychology (UGent) and visual arts at LUCA School of Arts in Brussels (2013, MA). His artistic practice oscillates between film and performance wherein both fields inform one another. In his studio, he produces and collects objects, sculptures, collage of texts, images and sounds that form an eclectic playground as a starting point for future works. Next to that, for more than ten years now, he’s been looking at his own hands, other peoples’ hands and how they relate to one another.

Goldberg Variations

Goldberg Variations is a dialogue between a filmmaker and a musician, consisting of a film and a publication, Sourcebook. Based on the eponymous composition by J.S. Bach, first published in 1740, the camera movement and concept of editing follow the internal structure of the musical score, here performed on the harpsichord.
