Art Cinema OFFoff is going all out again with an analog film projection and live music for the second edition of Heden Cinema – the summer series of ten open-air screenings at De Tuin van Heden, each curated by a different Ghent film exhibitor.
Nathaniel Dorsky and Jerome Hiler have been partners in life and cinema for nearly sixty years. Though each has produced a distinct body of work, their lyrical films share an akin sensibility and unspeakable beauty. Ten years ago, we presented a first program of their work, which is only being shown on analog film. This is the first screening in Belgium of Hiler’s new film, Careless Passage (2024).
Both films are shown silent at the projection speed of 18 frames per second from the silent film era, instead of the current standard of 24 frames per second.
Brussels-based musician and sound artist Florence Cats will perform an intro, interlude and coda (3 x 15′) on the theremin, interacting with the natural elements and sounds, and the intimate and ethereal quality of the films.
* De Tuin van Heden is easily accessible from Gent Sint-Pieters train station by shared bicycle (9′), public transport (15′), Uber (5′) or on foot (25′). The evening ends at 22:30. Afterwards, there are still several trains back to other cities (including the ones at 23:00 and 23:48 to Brussels).
