During the first weekend of July, the third edition of the free festival Psycho Jazz will take place at Museum Dr. Guislain in Ghent. Filmmaker and artist Dany Deprez will present the film performance Mexican Dog together with photographer and visual artist Faber Mahieu. They make use of about seven analog projectors and other optical accessories. Imre De Cauter (cello) and Matthias Dewilde (Fender Rhodes) will provide musical live improvisation. Together, the two musicians form the Ghent-based duo Matterhorn Well.

The ​‘Mexican Dog’ is a strange sound phenomenon that occurs when radio stations on the same frequency, but located in different parts of the world, start to interfere, especially at night. The disturbing, repetitive noise resembles distant howling or barking. Stumbling upon this on a tube radio was an enthralling experience. Would a visual counterpart be possible? In Mexican Dog, found footage is combined without imposing a narrative. The archival material evokes personal memories, yet at the same time, confronts you with an uncomfortable sense of incoherence. The chosen fragments are readable and historically significant, but become abstract, poetic compositions through the interference of overlapping frames. The Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Bonnard used to work directly onto large, unstretched rolls of canvas and would only later select and cut out a picture from it to frame. During restorations, it was discovered that the images extended over the edges. We live in a world where we cannot immediately point out things as they are.
