2020 ZOMERSALON BUY LOCAL
Grand exhibition offering visual art from Ghent for sale

Discover and support Ghent visual artists

Artists are struggling because of the corona crisis. Postponement and cancellation of exhibitions and commissions means that artists are missing out on income on a large scale. More than ever, they need your support.

Together with many cultural organisations in Ghent, Kunsthal Gent is therefore gathering the work of visual artists from the flourishing Ghent art scene this summer in a major exhibition: Summer Salon 2020 Buy Local’. The exhibition not only offers the public the opportunity to discover Ghent artists, but also to support them directly by buying a work!

The entire exhibition is for sale
Every work in the Summer Salon is for sale. The sale takes place between the buyer and the artist (or the gallery that represents the artist), without the intervention of Kunsthal Gent. In this way, as much of the proceeds as possible goes to the artist. Artists also choose a recent work from their own practice and decide on a price for it. In cooperation with Cultuurloket and NUCLEO, Kunsthal Gent is organising a webinar on pricing on Thursday 25 June to help them with this. More info and registration for the webinar.

From 17 July, all summer long: buy local!
The exhibition will be on show and for sale at Kunsthal Gent from 17 July, the beginning of the Cultural Summer of Ghent, an initiative of the Gents Kunstenoverleg (a collaborative platform of cultural organisations in Ghent), until 30 August. All works are also included in a catalogue.

Parallel to the exhibition at Kunsthal Gent, De Gentse Cultuurzomer (Ghent Summer of Culture) is launching an online platform on which all the works from the Summer Salon can be found (in collaboration wit croxhapox). This will also enable potential buyers to buy a work of art from the Summer Salon online.

Call for artists: register until 1 July
As of today, artists who live or work in Ghent or whose practice is clearly linked to the city can submit a work for the Summer Salon.

Register here and provide information about your work, your artistic practice and your contact details. You will also find more information about the conditions and regulations. Works that meet the conditions can be handed in at Kunsthal Gent until 5 July.

The Summer Salon is a nod to the former Kunstsalon’ during the Gentse Feesten: a competition for artists from Ghent that took place every two years from 1994 to 2011 in the Sint Pietersabdij (Saint Peter’s Abbey), organised by the City of Ghent.
