Alternative and interdisciplinary forms of screening are being sought in Atelier OFFoff – a participatory place for and by starting Flemish filmmakers and audiovisual artists. Several young artists explore multidisciplinary forms of presentation along and across the tangents of film, literature, music and visual arts.

Pourquoi on ne laisse pas tomber: Les Choses Qu’On Laisse Tomber et Qui Roulent

BE • 2018 • 26' • colour • digital
La Chambre Automatique starts from an atlas which unfolds through drawings, video works, written bundles, music and installations. Preferably in combination, in the shape of performances that follow self-written rules. For Pourquoi on ne laisse pas tomber, the ambition was to go to La Campagne”, to collide in the void of the fields with the ethical value of what is good or bad. Why not make a film that goes beyond people, the earth and the world, but which is also popular? The result is a brief explanation of a search for the making of a good film as well as the process of making itself, with the contradictory focus: the distraction.

Deve Falls: Gold Plating

BE • 2019 • 40' • colour • digital
For her essayfilm Deve Falls: Gold Plating, Deveny Faruque does not merely browse the found footage images and sounds she archives, but also stages non-actors or extras in various situations and environments, without letting them exchange a word. Much seems to have been taken from life, but there is always the suggestion of a tightly directed game. The quickly edited images are therefore the result of rigorous and systematic choices, while the soundtrack has been created very intuitively.

Jonathan William Beaton

Selected video works (2016-2019)

BE • 2019 • b&w • super8
Jonathan William Beaton often works with sound and words. With video, he has found an adequate and unruly medium to explore, purify and unite the two. In the past year Beaton became interested in oscilloscope art: making images from sound. This way of working creates possibilities and, at the same time, creates obstacles which feed and determine the minimalist aesthetics of his video images.
